Project Summary

Description

The property developer Tafecsados is currently building ten small apartment blocks in Sant Cugat, each containing twelve apartments. In this municipality, a solar ordinance is in force, which makes a solar thermal system mandatory for new buildings with a minimum solar fraction of 60 %.
Ecostream put in a 24 sqm solar thermal installation for hot water. In this project a semi-de-centralised solution was chosen, divided over four circuits. Because no natural gas is available at the site, electrical back-up heating is integrated. The solar energy system provides about 60 % of total hot water demand.

Because Tafecsados is renting the apartments out, the tenants will face a lower exploitation bill. To keep the exploitation cost as low as posible is an important issue for the developer and in that sense it is a profitable investment.

Development & experiences

Qualitative aspects of the CSTS

The project was initialised by the obligation of the Solar Ordinance of the municipality of Sant Cugat de Vallès.
The planning and installing of the CSTS was integrated from the first moment of the design of the building. However, several changes in the building were made during the construction phase that effected the CSTS design. The engineering company was flexibel to deal with these changes.


Summary of experiences / Notices to the project performance

The system is running well. there are no problems reported.

The installation was divided in 4 sub-systems. Due to changes in the building design in was not possible to install the CSTS system in the most optimal way, e.g. larger collector piping was needed.

Minor problems: The temperature of the mixing valves were set at the lowest temperature value so end temperature was to low

The occupation of useful living area by solar storages should be avoided because this area can not be sold/rented out as living area. So other system configurations should be considered or the storage should be placed in an area that is not marked as living area.
