Project Summary

Description
The complete restructuring and conversion of existing rural buildings into a residential complex was conceived to combine best building practice with well accepted and experimented energy saving measures. The installation of solar panels for hot water production was an obvious initial choice. High standard thermal insulation, efficient low temperature central heating coupled with individual energy metering to encourage savings, rainwater collection for garden irrigation, are among the other features accompanying the solar thermal water heating system.

"The initial decision was taken after an analysis at feasibility study level, considering the investment costs and the expected energy outputs for different combinations of panel surface and storage capacity. For instance, a solar contribution to the heating system was discarded due to excessive storage capacity needed.
Rather than contracting to a general contractor, the project was organised through a self-construction agreement assisted by a specialised ecological co-operative association. This permitted to select and purchase the most economical equipment directly from the manufacturers on the international market and, most important, to maximise the direct involvement of the owner to the wider perspective of the responsible use of energy and natural resources."

Summary

40 square metres of solar collectors are running in five stripes of 8 m2 each. Low-flow at 540 l/h runs into a storage buffer tank of 2,000 liters, which is heating a boiler of 1,000 liters, which is also connected to a burner at the upper heat exchanger.

Before the present intervention, in 2003/04, a 12 sqm solar panel for hot water production had been installed in an adjacent two-apartment building. The system has been operated with satisfaction by the tenants. The opportunity to experiment the same solution, but at a larger scale, is really what has triggered the present initiative.
