Project Summary

Description
The association liked to show awareness for the environment and to have the rigth image at the right time.
The condition of the building is good and the property is maintained very thoroughly.
The CSTC is used only for domestic hot water heating.
In the beginning the laundry machines in local common laundry facility also were connected to the domestic hot water system to save electricity for water heating in the machines. But the machine supplier has recommended the associating to disconnect that because there were no savings they said (this is however not proved officially).

Summary

The CSTS consists of 24 flat plate solar collectors from the company Batec. The panels are mounted on the southwest faced roof of the building. The total area of panels is grouped in 8 parts (each 6.6 m2) consisting of 3 panels (each 2.2 m2). In that way the panels look more like roof windows.

The hydraulic system is grouping two fields in parallel (the 8 parts are grouped together in two fields of 26.4 m2 each).

Pipes from the solar panels leads down to the basement where the pumping unit and the storage tank are situated.

Originally the CSTS was designed and monitored by the DTU and a report was edited.

The system was built as a drain back system. The system also consisted of an external heat exchanger (not in the storage tank). There existed a pump between the storage and the heat exchanger (typical “charging system”). Later this showed not to be ideal, it was regarded vulnerable and difficult to control. The energy losses and the electricity consumption were also high.

Later on in 2002 the system was changed with the respect to the drain back, heat exchanger and pumping system. The system is now operating the whole year with Polyethylene glycol. Now the system works expectedly, but could be optimised without any doubt.

It is not clear how the storage tank looks inside and how it is designed with respect to the cold-water inlet and stratification and the control of the system can be improved. A lot of energy meters are mounted in the hydraulic system (because of the monitoring programme) to give good and necessary knowledge about the operation, but only a few of the meters are now in operation. Several thermometers must be checked.
