Project Summary

Description

The plant is one of three solar systems financed by the province of Turin. It was installed on a new building from ATC, which is a local social housing company, and produces hot tap water for 42 dwellings. The 96 sqm flat plate collectors are installed according to the solar roof technology and are divided in to different fields, facing respectively east and west. The solar roof integration is cost effective and minimises the visual impact of the collectors. Each collector field is equipped with own pump and security components, allowing a separate control of the fields.
The solar gain of the plant will be available on the Province’s web page by the beginning of spring 2006.

„ATC Torino, a social housing public agency in the province of Turin, deals with environmental and energetic matters since 1996. Whenever possible, new technologies (especially renewable energies) have been adopted in ATC’s buildings in order to reduce the environmental impact.
The building located in Moncalieri, via Juglaris shows the will to experience the solar thermal technology. Due to a solar roof integration of the collectors, which is a cost effective and innovative solution in Italy, our solar thermal plant is very attractive also under the architectural point of view.

Summary

The solar system heats up a buffer storage via external heat exchanger. The buffer storage loads one of three hot tap water tanks through a second external heat exchanger. The other two hot water storages are heated up by both, the first storage and the boiler. In order to assure sanitary quality of the hot water, also the solar hot water tank can be heated up by the boiler.

Financing and investment

Introduction

The Province of Turin subsidised part of the total investment costs in a demonstration programme. Since the plant has been installed after building the building, the solar roof technology could not reach the usual cost effectiveness, but it still allowed a reduction of the system costs. Publications on the Province’s web site and presentations in newspapers, newsletters and exhibitions are connected to the demonstration program.
