Project Summary

Description

The pilot plant in Melegnano (Milano) was installed in 1999 on a public swimming pool and partially financed by the European Community. 200 square metres of solar collectors provide heat for both, the hot water system (81 MWh/a) and the swimming pool (42 MWh/a). The performance of the plant has been monitored accurately during the first year. A solar performance guarantee (at least 500 kWh/sqm) was available for the first twelve months of operation, whereas the calculated heat production had been estimated to about 615 kWh/sqm.
The plant has been planned according to large scale criteria (large collector modules, low flow).
The total system costs amount to about 625 EUR/sqm.

Summary

The solar circuit normally delivers heat to the hot water tanks, which are connected in series. According to the fluid temperature, either the first tank or the second tank are heated up. If the temperature in the tanks is higher than 50 °C and solar energy is available, the heat is delivered to the swimming pool via heat exchanger.

Financing and investment

Introduction

The solar plant was partly financed by the European Commission in the framework of a European SAVE project. The total costs amount to about 110,000 EUR, of which 40,000 EUR were provided by the Commission.
During the first years of operation, the plant has been monitored accurately due to powerful monitoring system.

Development & experiences

Qualitative aspects of the CSTS

The municipality of Melegnano, owner of the sport centre, reported that the solar plant leads to large benefits: before its installation the swimming pool users consumed most of the hot water, causing a lack of availability for the users of the soccer field. Since the solar plant was installed, this problem has been solved.
A cost-benefit analysis of the solar plant has never been carried out.

Course of planning

Due to the demonstration character of the plant, different actors where involved in the realisation. The engineering company „Sergio Colombo“ designed the plant with the technical supervision of the research institute Ambiente Italia and the Technical University of Milan, which was also responsible for the monitoring. The Austrian company Solid provided the collectors and installed the plant.

How is the CSTS running?

The plant is running properly. Apart from the economical benefits, the plant raised the user‘s comfort, since it covers former interruptions in the deliver of hot water to the soccer field locker room.
