Project Summary

Description

The „Karl-Lemmermann-Haus“ is a residential accommodation for homeless males.
Within their social work the association‘s management decided to give some money for the installation of a solar thermal system.
In 2002 they started an overall modernisation of the building‘s energy supply: a solar thermal plant for hot tap water heating, a 4.7 kWp-photo­voltaic plant and a rainwater catchment system.
The building is from 1958, but it shows a quite good standard of insulation today. Although the solar thermal plant is used for hot tap water heating only, the whole energy consumption for heating purposes has been reduced by more than five percent.

Summary

The solar thermal system with its collector surface area of 44.24 sqm (aperture area: 40.64 sqm) is used for hot tap water heating.
Due to the building orientation, the flat plate collectors had to be mounted westwards. Nevertheless the system yield is quite high: in the first three years of operation the average collector output was at about 12,100 kWh per year, which equals a yearly output of 300 kWh per sqm aperture area.

Financing and investment

Introduction

The total costs of the solar system amounted to 33,192 EUR, one third accounting for the collectors.
Grants were given by the local fund proKlima and the German market incentive program, both depending on collector surface areas.
A soft loan was approved by the federal state of Lower Saxony. The volume added up to 50 % of the total costs at a term of 15 years. This loan is not available any more.

Concerning the assessment of tenders and placing of orders, the investors feel confirmed to have set a high value on a competent and detailed consultation. The association has made very good experiences with their partners, which today settles in a perfect plant and high savings, respectively.
